Wildest Dreams
Birds
series director | visual lead | location multi-camera director
Wildest Dreams was a 7 × 60-minute series for BBC1’s evening schedule, filmed in remote parts of four African countries. Ten members of the public competed for a coveted job at the BBC Natural History Unit. Presented by the NHU’s James Honeybourne and Nick Knowles, this episode also featured bird expert Professor John Piper.
I created the series’ visual identity and conceived the campsite around a central hub tent that served as both our mess tent and studio. Working from a makeshift gallery, I directed all the multi-camera studio set pieces, including those shown here, and the task sequences, which often required extensive health and safety planning — while contending with floods, tornadoes and enormous spiders. I also devised bespoke lighting solutions for the camp after dark, as seen in these clips, and planned the aerial and helicopter sequences.
